Patricia Whaley, viola
Patricia Whaley is active as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral performer and teacher throughout Northern California and across the country. She currently holds the position of Principal Viola for Symphony Silicon Valley, Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley, and the Modesto Symphony, and is also a member of the Oakland East Bay Symphony. She joined the San Jose Symphony as Assistant Principal Viola in 1983 upon completion of her Master of Music degree at the Peabody Conservatory, where she was a scholarship student of the renowned violist and teacher Karen Tuttle. Of her playing, one critic commented: "Ms. Whaley is equally adept in richness of tone. Her playing soared and sang....in a memorable display of virtuosity." (The Capital)
Ms. Whaley spent three summers performing and teaching at the acclaimed Eastern Music Festival in North Carolina, where she performed chamber music with such renowned guest artists as violinists Franco Gulli and Peter Zazofsky. She has appeared as soloist with the San Jose Symphony, Peninsula Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, Sinfonia San Francisco, and San Jose State University ensembles. She performs regularly with numerous other Bay Area groups including the San Francisco Symphony and Opera, California Symphony, Santa Rosa Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, Cabrillo Music Festival, and Midsummer Mozart, and on chamber music series from Marin to Santa Cruz.
Born in Berkeley, Ms. Whaley is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UC Berkeley, where she was awarded both of the University's most prestigious prizes in the arts, the Eisner Prize and the Hertz Traveling Fellowship. In addition to graduate work with Ms. Tuttle, she has had additional viola studies with Michael Tree, Milton Thomas, and Ellen Rose Adams, and chamber music studies with the American String Quartet, members of the Claremont String Quartet, Gabor Rejto, and Jerome Lowenthal.
From 1987 through 1996, Ms. Whaley held the position of viola instructor and violist of the faculty string quartet at San Jose State University. She currently maintains a private teaching studio in Oakland, and coaches members of many local youth orchestras. Ms. Whaley resides in Oakland, California, with her husband, conductor Mitchell Sardou Klein, and their daughter Elizabeth.
