Biography

Mimi Carlson, flute

Mimi Carlson is a member of the new Symphony Silicon Valley and Principal Flute for Ballet San Jose. She was a member of the former San Jose Symphony from 1973 through its final season in 2001, playing both flute and piccolo.

A longtime member of the Midsummer Mozart Festival Orchestra, and founder of the RedWoodWinds Quintet, she has performed on flute and piccolo with many other Bay Area musical groups, including Opera San Josť, American Musical Theatre of San Jose, San Francisco Merola Opera Orchestra, Monterey Symphony and Women's Philharmonic. She has been a soloist with the San Jose Symphony, Master Sinfonia, Monterey Symphony, New Sousa Band, Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra, Ohlone Wind Orchestra, Santa Clara University Orchestra, and the Austin (Minnesota) Symphony.

Ms. Carlson studied flute and piano at Interlochen and continued both instruments at Carleton College in Minnesota, where she earned a BA degree. During her career she participated in Master Classes with such well-known flutists as Julius Baker, Michel Debost, and Emmanuel Pahud. She was the flute instructor for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before coming to Santa Clara University in 1978. She also maintains a private teaching studio.
